Occupational Therapy

Throughout our lives, we all encounter a range of transitions, turning points, and unexpected challenges that require us to adjust and adapt. These experiences are an inevitable aspect of the human journey and the average person experiences several major life transitions. These can be a natural progression through the life stages like moving from adolescent to adulthood, entering middle age or retirement.  Some transitions we actively choose, like starting a new job, becoming a parent or moving to a new country. Others arrive unexpectedly, such as relationships ending, losing your job or a health diagnosis.

While such moments can sometimes be daunting and filled with anxiety, they are also often exciting and brimming with potential. Importantly, they provide valuable opportunities for personal growth, allowing us to evolve into the people we aspire to be and pursue what truly matters to us

Are you going through a period of change? This could be through job loss, retirement, promotion at work, leaving the military, relationships break up, moving to a new area or country, leaving home, empty nester, reaching a significant age, a new health diagnosis, etc.

Transition and change can naturally lead you to experience:

  • Uncertainty regarding your role or future and prompt you to question your current position and the direction you are heading in, potentially leading to feelings of doubt or confusion.

  • Changes in the way you view yourself and  have a significant impact on your sense of identity and may influence your interactions with colleagues, friends, and family members.

  • A disruption of your established routines and daily patterns with the familiar structure that provides a sense of stability becoming unsettled, requiring you to adapt and establish new rhythms to your day-to-day life.

  • The need to acquire new skills, develop different habits, or adopt alternative ways of thinking to effectively manage these changes.

  • A variety of emotional responses including stress, anxiety, depression or grief.

If any of this sounds like you, occupational therapy is perfectly placed to help you not only navigate the current transition, but also to build your resilience to face future changes with greater confidence.

How can I help

I am a qualified Occupational Therapist with more than 30 years of mental health and well-being experience collaborating with people to help them live more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Through personal experience, and changes and transitions in my own life (including moving countries, challenging job changes and ageing), I have come to understand the importance of discovering new possibilities, work/life balance, participating in meaningful activities and prioritising well-being.

I help people to consider what is important in their lives so they can do the things that matter most to them – it could be in their family roles, careers, leisure, relationships, or a combination of many life factors.

I offer the opportunity to help you explore where you have come from, re-engage with your dreams and hopes and what matters in your life, and plan for the future. I help you make adjustments to build on the good and strategies to manage the difficulties, which could include:

  • Improving emotional regulation

  • Improving executive function skills to improve focus and organisation

  • Understanding and improving relationships

  • Improving productivity or managing work stress

  • Sensory regulation to manage emotions better

I help people achieve balance by identifying and implementing new habits and daily routines to cope best with demands. This will help reduce your stress and anxiety, improve your daily functioning, and enable you to become more flexible and resilient. Ultimately helping your feel happier and more fulfilled.

I am also a Sensory Intelligence® Practitioner, trained in Sensory Modulation – a powerful tool that helps you understand yourself better and the activities and coping strategies that are best for you.

What I can offer

I offer a combination of occupational therapy treatment, coaching and sensory modulation, which is flexible and tailored to each person’s individual lives and needs.

If it sounds like the kind of support you think you need or you want to discuss any initial concerns, please contact me for an informal 20-minute chat with no obligations. We can explore what is happening for you, what you would like to change or move towards and how I can help you to make it happen. If you decide that you would like to take up treatment, we will book in an assessment. Within London and East Surrey, in-person appointments in a mutually agreed location could be offered, otherwise we can set up online sessions.
