Occupational Formulation and Measurable Goal Setting Training

This course is designed for Occupational Therapists who want to provide occupation-focused, client-centred care that is recovery-focused. Occupational Formulation is a theory-based approach that offers a bridge between theory, assessment, and therapy.  Assessment information is compiled into a narrative that can be shared with clients through a collaborative process, leading to the negotiation of measurable occupational goals to guide treatment interventions. This course will appeal to therapists passionate about ensuring that occupation is central to their practice.

About

My experience of Occupational Formulation

I was fortunate to have gained my Occupational Therapy qualification in South Africa, where I worked prior to moving to the UK in 2005.  In 2012, I discovered Occupational Formulation, which has significantly enhanced my practice as a clinician, supervisor and manager of Occupational Therapy services.  I have had the privilege of receiving Occupational Formulation and Goal Setting training from Sue Parkinson on multiple occasions, as well as supervision from her regarding my application of Occupational Formulation.

Based on my belief in, and experience with the power of Occupational Formulation and Measurable Goal Setting, I have implemented it into various Occupational Therapy services that I have managed, including trauma, eating disorders and personality disorder services.

I take great pleasure in sharing my expertise in Occupational Formulation through the training and supervision of my colleagues.

Benefits of Occupational Formulation and Goal Setting

  • My approach is rooted in understanding ‘what matters to my clients’, and I have found Occupational Formulation invaluable in gaining insights into a client’s occupational identity, creating a depth of therapeutic alliance that has been very empowering both for me as a clinician and for the clients with whom I have the privilege to work.

  • This approach has enabled the Occupational Therapy services I managed to meet the objectives of enhancing person-centred care through adopting an occupation focused, conceptual model of practice that ensure reporting stays occupation- focused.

  • This approach has enabled me to demonstrate positive outcomes for clients, including a reduction in symptomatology.

  • Most importantly, I have been able to show Occupational Therapy treatment’s impact on the client’s occupational functioning, performance and satisfaction, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
